Hello everyone,
currently doing the upper and lower intake gasket replacement, was leaking at the front drivers side. Well the front intake to head bolt was corroded and came out by hand, half of it. Im not sure if i can turn it out by grasping the small amount that is above the surface of the head, so ill probably have to drill it out and do the helicoil repair. does anyone know what size bit i should use and what helicoil size i should get or do you get the helicoil set first?

Have to pull the head, going to do the head gasket replacement for both sides (since im down this far, as along as the exhaust manifold bolts dont start breaking on me). broke a bolt extractor off in the hole i was able to get drilled down through the corroded bolt, that took about two hours. have had no luck getting past that extractor. Does anyone know if there is more to adjusting the valves on this motor, than just reinstalling the rocker arms. THanks in advance

Valves are self adjusting.Just torque the rocker arm nuts to the shop manual specs and call it good.

I don't know what the hell it is with Fords, but their bolts always seem to break in the block. My friends shop said he does more Ford's to extract bolts then any other make. I had to even take mine there when I was replacing my thermostat, one bolt snapped off in the block and had to use heat and extract it over 3 hours to get that damn thing out. When I had it towed in, there were 2 F-150's, Mustang, and Explorer with broken from the block/intake manifold.

I recenty replaced the plastic intake manifold on my 2001 F-150 5.4 .3 bolts snapped off in the cylinder head(aluminum).I feel your pain.Took an extra 4 hours of drilling and helicoiling to fix it.

Thanks for the responses,
Spoke to a guy at a machine shop about getting that bolt out, he was not happy that i tried it myself, he said it going to make it harder for him. I just hope that the mating surface is not marred up in the process of getting it out.

Another question, The helms manual and the haynes manual both say that the exhaust manifolds have to be removed completly from the vehicle to get the heads off, is this true. I havent been able to locate the exhaust manifold to exhaust pipe gaskets online. The haynes manual says that the a/c system needs to be discharged, the helms says to just remove the a/c compressor/ powersteering pump bracket, which i did. I have been sick, so this is as far as ive gotten. Need to get this thing back on the road asap.

about the valve adjustment, Haynes say tdc on each cylinder then torque, helms say nothing. I quess if i spin it over by hand atleast ill be making sure nothing is hanging up.

any info is appreciated.
