Let me first apologize for opening a new post, I know most vets hate adding repetition.
But I felt that the previous posts were not very helpful in my situation.
I hope the title is appropriate. I want others to benefit from this aswell.
I am having a problem with my explorer and I find it hard to trust the mechanics in my area.
I have a 98 ford Explorer 2 door Sport
V6 4.0L SOHC VIN - E
with approx. 160,000 Miles
As a note I did use Lucas Fuel Treatment (injector cleaner) about every other tank fill. It really helped with fuel economy. I was using this about 3-4 months ago.
For the past Year I had a K&N Air Panel filter installed. Cleaned every 30K Miles.
Lately I have been having problems with the Transmission and the Idle.
About 2 months ago. I was getting CEL codes of 171 and 174
Fuel/Air mix too lean Bank 1 and Fuel/Air mix too lean Bank 2. Every one says this relates to the O2 Sensors. Also Rough Idle in the morning but doesn't stall.
I haven't had the cash or time (mostly cash) to replace them. But someone did suggest that it also relates to MAF.
So I got a can of MAF Cleaner for Advance Autoparts. That did help for about 03.00 miles. I also removed the K&N panel filter that I had been using. I replaced it with a Fram disposable.
No improvement. So about 1-2 month ago I noticed that my O/D light started to flash at me... This started around the same time that I replaced my muffler and Tail pipe. I checked and there have been no apparent leaks. There are no apparent error codes with the O/d light. Except for P0420 with is mostly pending. Catalyst below Efficacy.
Now this part is strange. The O/D light will stop flashing when I drive in REVERSE for about 10 feet. Stop. Turn off. Turn on drive for about a mile.
It will come back on again in about 70-100 miles of straight driving with out --correction-- using reverse. The O/D and error 420 doesn't APPEAR to be connected.
Now in the mornings with the winter settling in, it will stall if I don't rev the gas. If it does happen to stall about 2-3 times it will put out error 305 Cylinder 5 misfire.
Spark plugs were changed in July by a trusted mechanic (repair shop, certified). (Father’s Recommendation, other side of state)
This morning, error codes are 0171 0174 0305 PD O/D Flash (flash stopped after back out)
I am planning on dropping the cash to replace the O2 Sensors and Cats. What should I start with? I can't change them all at once.
Is there more info that you need? Could I have borked my stuff with the fuel treatment? I have stopped using it. It felt good working on my own vehicle, not a fan of paying labor.
Where is a good starting point?
Thank you all in advance just for reading my plight
