I just bought an 98 explorer sport 4.0 for my son. I have 2 different noises I cant seem to locate. The first is a chirping or broken squeeling noise that is coming from the back of the throttle body. It is not the belt or pulleys. The other sounds like a Airplane landing coming from the rear at slower speeds. I did get new Bridgestone Dueler A/T"s recently. Would they make this noise? I hope!. Since I just bought the explorer I dont have a comparison before I put the new tires on.Thanks:(

New tires make some added noise untill the soften up some.

As for the motor noise search for 0012. There is a couple of Service bulitens for noise. On the Chain tensioner, and a manafold gasket I beleve.

I just jacked up the back wheels and it seems to make a grumbling noise so I guess it is not the tires. Maybe wheel bearings? Is it supposed to make a little grumbling noise?

I've had my '98 for about 5 months now. It has always made a slight grinding (i don't really think that's the correct word for it, but I'm not sure what is....maybe glorified road noise) since I bought it. I really worried me at first, but I have gotten used to it and there doesn't seem to be any problems.

Ive owned 2 98's maybe I can help. Is the airplane sound that you mentioned coming from the under the hood? This noise could be coming from your IAC (idle air contrl) Do you have the SOHC engine?

No the airplane growling noise is coming from the rear end. The intermittent squeaks is coming from the throttle body area. It sounds like a belt or pulley but it is not in that area. I have the 4.0 ohc engine. Thanks

OK sorry, Im not realy going to be much help with ohv. Ive only had the SOHC. good luck to ya, hope it all turns out ok.
