I'm new to Ford Exploeres, I just bought a 98 with 126k for the girlfiend. When I put it in 4 High it pulls hard to the right under exceleration. (Sorta sucked in the snow.) It drives staight as an arrow in 4 Auto. The tie rods and tires are good and ball joints look like they are replaced but one on lower drivers side. We do get a rattle on left side hitting frost heaves. Any ideas why it would pull to the right?

In auto mode it's just rear wheel drive. If it's pulling just in 4wheel then one of the front wheels are different somehow, check tire size, inflation pressure, even wether one tire is a lot more worn than the others can make a difference.

I believe its all wheel drive in 4Auto and 4High is locked in. I checked ball joints today and they are all fine.
Regarding the tires, they are all the same size, no uneven wear, and tire pressure is all the same. I even rotated the tires today and it still does it.
I'm at a lose....

Can you jack the truck up all around and run it to see which wheels are turning? You are correct 4W high = 4x4, 4w auto = 2x4 (unless the computer sees slippage and it will engage 4x4). To get the problem you have one side must not be pulling.

I went down a really muddy road, from a dead stop I put it in 4Auto and get on it to take off. In 4Auto the both front tires would engage with limited slip and there was no pulling to the right. And no pulling under regular driving conditions.

But I did the same thing in 4High. When I got on it to see if all 4 tires where locked, (they where) it would pull to the right. Even driving at 20, 30, 40 ,50mph and you excelerate it would pull. Coasting or maintaining the same speed it does not do it.

It's suppose to snow here Wed and Thur, and my girlfriend is afraid to drive it. It pulls that bad.
