i just bought a 98 explorer 4wd, not awd. i am having the same problem as described in this thread

http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=277628&highlight=4405

anytime over 40mph if i let off the gas i hear a loud grinding noise until i slow down below 25-30mph. i also have no reverse or park most times. when i picked the truck up it kept going into 4low every few times i started it and wouldnt come out. so i took the shift motor connector off so it wont do that for now, also i removed the front driveshaft because i thought that was the source of the noise

so now the background is covered, is this the transfer case causing these problems even with the no reverse and no park at times, or is it the trans, and if its the trans what would explain the phantom 4low at times?

i'm pretty sure from searching on here that i have the typical bad transfer case, now if you agree, my question is this, since 97 has the sensor under the rear output flange, can i install a 97 on my 98 and just not use that sensor? its just for speedo right?
