'98 Premium System Upgrade

My '98 XLT has the premium sound system (AM/FM/CD/Cassette, changer, rear controls). I've read the forum comments about the stock head unit, but I personally like it because of the looks and the "wow, rear controls!" factor. I want to upgrade and keep the look as stock as possible. I plan to replace the speakers, put a subwoofer in the stock location in the right rear, and install an amplifier to add some punch. I also want to make this as painless as possible.

Any suggestions on a decent amp and mounting location? I don't want it under the seat, but I'm not sure where else might work on a '98. I know the earlier X's had an amp under the right rear quarter panel trim - is that a workable location on a '98?

I'd appreciate any assistance.

I beleive there have been changes, but my '97 premium sound had the brain located in the rear quarter where the factory sub is.. so you could remove that and put a new amp there, and get the JL stealth box. it holds a 10w3 I beleive, that should give you some nice thump, for the HU, a double DIN HU would look nice, or get a matching EQ and HU, or do what I did..

as far as the rear controls, I've been told there is a kit you can use for most aftermarket HUs to make those useable again.. if not.. you could always rig something with the remote

The Stealthbox will hold a 10w0, a 10w1 or a 10w6. The 10w3 is the one that won't fit. This is the JL Audio stealthbox though. I don't exactly know what will or won't fit in a Q-Logic, MTX, Vantage, etc. box.

How much is a Jl Stealthbox with a 10w1 or 10w0??
Also the stealthbox doesn't come with an amp does it?? If you guys were to pick the MTX Thunderform vs. the Jl Stealthbox is one considerably better. Why is one better than the other one?
Lastly, is there a difference in quality when powering a sub with line level inputs vs. RCA?

lol, the one I say is the one I got wrong haha, well, hey, if yer gonna get a sealth box.. try and get a 10w6, IMO, the w0 is not the kind of sub you want, my experience has just been that they are not a quality sub in sound or reliability
