98 Explorer EB 4.0 SOHC
I havent been on here for a while. I also havent touched the Explorer for a while either. Trying to get this thing on the road for a daily. If you remember any of my other posts, I have a 98 EB 4.0 SOHC, Auto. That I got for free. It had been sitting 5+ years. I dropped the tank, put in a used fuel pump, cleaned the tank, Replaced a/c compressor and redid the whole a/c system. And now its running. The thing will run awesome for 10 mins. Yesterday I started it after sitting for a month. And drove a few miles. Once it warms up and you drive a little, It falls flat on its face. If you floor it it boggs down horrible. You can only give it about 1/4 throttle. Under 1/4 throttle it will rev clean through the rpms and eventually get to speed. Any more then that it just dies. Ive replaced the fuel filter a few times (Still getting a lil brown gas each time) Cleaned the MAF and threw a cone filter on it. What would you suggest next?

No codes at all, I will look into intake leaks

Would it run great for a few mins?

Original Reason for being taken off the road was shop told him it was locked up...
It was the a/c compressor locked ;)

Have you changed the fuel filter? My guess is gas sitting in there for five years would cause a minor clog... Also what about plugs, wires, and a full tune up?

Good point on checking the plugs and wires, at the very least pull the plugs and inspect them.

Intake gasket leaks are usually a problem when the engine is cold, when hot they expand and seal.
The earlier 4.0L SOHC's are notorious for leaking upper and lower gaskets, check them regardless.

My guess is intake manifold o-rings. If they are original I bet they are like cardboard by now. For a truck to be sitting such a long time it will need some maintenance to get back to par.

Oh also add air filter to that mix to check... When I got my last explorer the owner before me left it for a while and some birds built a nest in the intake box (under the air filter) . Probably not the case from the sounds of your problem... but still something quick to check.

when I cleaned the mass air flow and found the rat's nest inside the air box I pulled it out and stuck a cone filter on it. I got some plugs and wires to throw it just haven't had time to do those yet. all fluids have been flushed and changed. I am going to keep on changing fuel filters to trying to get the last of the sediment that is getting sucked up. even though I cleaned the hell out of the tank when I did the pump
