When maintaining speed on an incline, vehicle starts to buck or jerk. Problem goes away when vehicle is kicked into low gear. I'm not sure if the problem is the engine missing or transmission related. This has been happening for several weeks and today the 'check engine' light came on, indicating it might be engine related. Any suggestions??

Sounds like it could use a tune-up. How many miles does it have on the current plugs and wires?

New plugs about 18K miles ago (done by a questionable garage). 80K miles on the original wires.........

I would definitely put some new wires in there and new plugs too. I know you only have 18K on the plugs but it can't hurt. I recommend and use the Autolite double platinums.

Try cleaning the MAS too.
