Is there anything that can be done to temporarily disable the 4 wd? This isn't my vehicle and I really don't understand how it works. Am I correct that the front driveshaft will turn all the time but there are actuators at the wheels that engage the 4 wd?

The individual that owns this vehicle has to drive it a 100 miles home and I told him I think it can destroy the TC.

There is no actuator at the hubs that was only on some rangers the explorer hubs are all the same. The brown wire mod will stop transfer case from driving the front axle but everything will still be spinning.

if it is stuck in 4wd it is possible something is messed up in the transfer case, look at what that is first , before he drives it that far or it could leave him on the roadside,

Would pulling the front shaft help at all? Or are you saying the problem is in the transfer case and it can still do damage?

the transfer case clutch may already be shot causing it to stay in 4wd all the time, so taking out the front shaft will take the pressure off the front end and will stop the skipping and binding associated with the front end being engaged all the time, while on pavement,
so taking out the front shaft may be a good idea, , that way he will be able to get it home, just drive slow , and carefully,
