Hello,

'99 Expolrer V6 SOHC with 139,000 miles dies when I try to drive, it idles just fine in park but sputters, jerks and then dies when gased in reverse or drive.

The check engine light came on about 2 months back, egr issues according to Autozones code reader, then the same at Seeburg and another shop. The EGR valve has been tested with a hand pump, cleaned and the mass air flow sensor was replaced. This all helped for nothing and was very costly and of course the check engine light still came right back on after I disconnected the battery for a few minutes.

I replaced the thermostat 4 days ago due to a overheating scare which worked out great as the temp gauge is reading stable. Today it drove like a champ then tonight on the way home from work I tried to pull from the parking lot and it died on me severel times. I can slowly reach speeds up to about 30 MPH on flat ground but if I try to actually drive it sputters hard, slugs and kills over, it won't pull any small hills at all and stays running as long as I keep my foot of the gas pedal.

Friends have given ideas of maybe bad spark plugs, distributer cap, router or points. Another suggested the fuel fliter. Any of you fine folks have any suggestions ?

Thanks and Happy Holidays.

There are no distributor cap, router or points on your Explorer or any for that matter. There are spark plugs, plug wires and a coil pack. My first guess would be fuel filter or fuel pump. The pump may not be supplying the engine with enough fuel pressure, but I would change the filter first and see what happens. It may also be the TPS.

Do you know what the codes were the last time you pulled them? It is a good idea to have the codes pulled again while the CEL is on and post them here. That's going to be your best option to try to find the problem.

I wonder if the temp outside was differant when it ran well.....if so could be inlet manifold seals.....just a thought!

Hello again,

Today I will change out the fuel filter and I will report back later or tomorrow. Assuming I get the thing drivable again I will have the codes re checked and post them here. Thanks.

Hi,

Ok the fuel filter was replased as was the egr valve sensor (SU2108).
It sounds like there may be a vacum leak but the entire manifold and all visible lines where sprayed, a big mystery and the egine still sputters and dies when throttled while in gear. Another guess was to replace the O2 sensors. The codes that showed today at Autozone are listed below. Thanks.

You know what? You need to crawl under your car and take a good, hard, close look at the wiring harnesses. You might have a damaged or burned harness. Pay close attention to the harness that goes to the left side of the transmission. Follow the harnesses as far as you can.
