- 1999 Ford Explorer V8 5.0
Hello to all you Explorer forum guru's!! Its been a while since I needed the forum's help, but thats only due to the fact that my Explorer has been running great, and the check engine light has been off for a while (thank god!) However, all good things never seem to last forever, espically in my world! lol
O.K. my Explorer is a 1999 V8 2 wheel drive, and just last week, while I was driving to work, the check engine light came on. (Damnit!!) (they never seem to stay off long enough)
I have an Innova Code Scanner/Reader/Tester tool and the problem code that it produces is P0455. Note to all: this is the one and only code that it produces, there are no other codes that it produces along with the P0455. (see, in the past, when the light came on, it would usually read 2 to 3 to sometimes 4 different codes at the same time, this time, its not the case)
Now, unlike most people who post questions on the forum, I have done my research first, here on this site, and I am still unclear on how to test the certain items that may be faulty.
The first thing I tried: replacing the gas cap with a NEW one, so I went to O'Rileys and bought a BRAN NEW cap, installed the cap, reset the code with the Innova Scanner, and once again, after 20 miles or so, the light returns, and produces the same P0455 code, with no other codes. So, basically, the gas cap was not the problem.
Next, I read several times on the forum that it could be a faulty neck coming from the gas tank, which has a hose attatched to it. However, I have to know for certain that this could be the problem, because the Explorer is my only vehicle, and I cant afford to be down a couple days due to me removing the tank. I seem to be under the impression, that in order for me to check to see if the neck is the problem, I have to drop the tank down, and I just cant do that right now, unless I know for a fact that thats where the problem is.
Next I read that it could be a faulty hose/canister and buying a new one would fix the problem. However, the problem with this is that I dont make much money, so I cant afford to go and just buy a bunch of parts and hope that one of them does the trick.
So, my main point to all this comes to "Testing" the electrical components that are associated with the P0455 problems. Most of the forum advice comes from buying new parts and replacing them, however, I would like to know if there is any way for me to test certain parts first, making sure the part is faulty, before buying a new one.
Example: One forum guru said to test the fuel sending unit. However, this person did not tell how to test it?? Or if the part has to be removed?? Another I read was that sometimes the gauges in the instrument pannel go bad, and this could be the culprit. It said to take one wire of a part and ground it to the engine and if the guage peggs out, then it could be something else. (I am mechanically inclined, believe it or not, however, when people use forigen words like sending unit, evaporator canister, I have no idea what it looks like nor do i know where its located)
So, could someone please tell me the parts that are associated with the P0455 code, and if there is any way to test these parts for voltage or contunitinity? If so, could someone also please tell me where these parts are located on the vehicle?? Even better, could someone send me pics of these parts so I know what they look like??
I know this may be asking for a lot, but like I said eariler, I am poor, I.E. thats why I am on the forum and not in some shop, nor do I make much money. So since I am doing the work or the trouble shooting, I need the best, most detailed help I can find.
Thank all you guru's very much for your help, and thank you all for the help you have provided me with in the past. I sometimes think of you guru's as my "answered prayer"
Thats no joke......
THANK YOU VERY MUCH, JEFF GENTRY
