99 explorer problem

buddy has a 99 and his 4x4, and low range lights are flickering while he is driving down the road. I told him to remove the battery cable, and reset the puter. Anyone else have any idea?? Also, he said it definately isn't engaged, just flickering lights.

Yeah, hook up an OBDII scanner and see if it's throwing any sort of codes. Check wiring harness to tranfer case. Check fluids. Reset is good.
I think this would throw a code though, which would make things easier.

Is he engaging 4-lo properly?
