I picked up a 99 Explorer 4.0 SOHC auto 4x4 a few weeks ago. Truck was driving fine but the shifter read funny(would display 2 when in OD figured just needed to be adjusted) and felt weird(the shifter never really felt like it was engaging in the right spot) when I got it. PO told me the 4x4 worked which was untrue I did not get a chance to test it and I had no reason not to believe him at the time. So I swapped a BW1354 in it about a week after I got it. I figured I would just lived with the annoying 4x4 lights flashing until I could find a 2wd GEM for it. Anyway a few days later the transmission started shifting funny and the OD light was flashing. I tried adjusting the shifter linkage and replaced the TPS didn't help. What the truck does it will start out fine in first shift into 2nd then all the sudden just down shift under half throttle. No issue at full throttle or light throttle. Then it goes into limp mod once the OD light starts flashing. I tried unhooking the battery which makes it drive fine for awhile then all the sudden it acts up. Always after the 4x4 light starts flashing. Just looking for ideas. Could the GEM be causing the problem? Or did this guy hose me probably knowing the tranny was on it's way out. The timing just seems odd I must have drove it 400 miles before(maybe 150 after the 1354 swap) it started acting up. Thanks for the help. If it turns out to be pricey might be time for a 5 speed. LOL
