Anyone ever run into this? When I shift gears between drive and 2nd or 1st, there is an arc in the steering column from right near the shift lever. It arcs and I see a little puff of smoke. The previous owner said he had to leave the column covers off or a fuse would blow. I am assuming either something is pinching or rubbing against a wire in the harness, but I am planning on tearing it down to get a better idea of the problem.
Is there anything obvious in that area that I should look for that might be pinching a wire or something? Also, how far do I have to tear it down so that I can dig into the wiring harness in the column? I am planning on dropping the column anyway as I have to tighten the shifter lever and maybe adjust it. Will I have to pull the steering wheel to get access to the wiring, or can I dig in far enough to check things out without having to pull the wheel? Any advice is appreciated.
