99 Ranger 2WD No Reverse Update

Hi Everyone,

I have posted about this before, but have not had a reply in almost a month and was hoping to get some more help with this.

Glacier991 and Bent Bolt have been kind enough to reply to my previous posts and the following is information that I have observed in response to their questions.

99 Ranger XLT SuperCab 2WD that I recently purchased with no reverse. All forward gears work normally, including when I selected 1st manually. I do not recall if I had engine braking in manual 1st.

3.0L, Auto Trans (4R44E?)

Pulled the valve body. The gaskets on both sides of the separator plate looked good.

2 of the 3 screws holding the separator plate to the valve body did not feel very tight, even with my using a 1/4" drive ratchet.

I did the Ford TSB, and still have the valve body on my bench, but am reluctant to reassemble without checking other things to try and cure my no reverse problem.

The green gasket on the reverse servo cover looks good as do the 2 'O' rings on the servo itself.

The band felt springy when I pushed with a screwdriver.

One thing I noticed is that when I pushed on the plug for the reverse modulation valve it was stuck. Now that it is free, there is a springy feel to it. Is this why I didn't have reverse?

I look at the shaft on the reverse servo today and the tip is kind of beat up. I have posted a couple of pics:

Do I have to replace it? Any ideas on what happened?

Pete... yes you need to replace that. Hope that the pieces that appear to have spalled off are in your filter and not in your VB. Yes your stuick valve could very well have been the root cause of your problem.

I have never observed the condition present on the end of the low/reverse servo rod such as you display, but have had others experience the same thing. I think it is a manufacturing defect, but that is a flat out guess.
