Hi All,

Let me start with Thanks for your the information and effort you folks have put into your posts. It is helping a lot.

I could use some help and advise from you folks. I'm new to Explorers but not Ford trucks.

I'm trying to put a Type B (Full length) floor console from a 1999 Explorer XLT AWD 4D into a 1999 Explorer Sport 2D 4WD and upgrade the stereo system. I just found I have no floor Console under the dash.

I just acquired the 99 Explorer Sport (4.0 OHV) 4WD a couple of weeks ago. My efforts thus far have been in cleaning it up. It had a busted up shorty console and blown door speakers with the factory

Radio/cassette (F87F-19B132). In the process of looking for a replacement console I ran across the posts about swapping the shorty console (type A) with a full length console (Type B). After more research, I located one at a salvage yard.

I was able to get a complete Type B - Full console (with the floor mount bracket and front air box cover). It has the wiring harness intact and even included a Clarion 6 CD changer (PN

Xw1F-18C830-AB). The CD Changer harness is built into the console harness. I picked up the Radio too since it was a factory (I presume, based on pics I've seen here) AM/FM/Cass/CD. The only info on the

Radio is M7D157 638-01139. Both connectors on the radio were full of wires. It does not have the DSP/??? buttons some posts have indicated the MACH Radios have.

I first suspected I might have problems when I pulled my original Radio. It only has 1 wire on the second connector (closest to the antenna connector). Both Radio connectors on the donor Explorer were full of wires.

Even so, the new Radio/Cass/CD seems to play fine. My existing rear speakers are sort of OK. I have two sets of new ones on order.

I just pulled the ash tray assembly out of my Explorer Sport, in preparation for the weekends work, and checking to see if the extra wires in the connector could have been an overlay harness for the

CD changer, when ...

I found that there is no floor console connector on my explorer. I pulled the Radio and looked around under the dash and cannot find one. :( I got the Explorer Sport from the local State Surplus auction. I guess it could be a stripped down fleet edition or something. I don't have any info on it.

My question is about the floor Console harness in the dash.

Is the console harness under the dash something that can be removed from a donor vehicle and used? ... or is it nearly impossible.

Also, any suggestions on the CD changer with with console harness.

I would really like to have the new console functions working. I'm really bummed not to find the connector.

Any advise? Thanks in advance. :salute:

Welcome, and I have a good idea of what you have and want. I have a 99 Limited which I rebuilt completely, and I have seen every one of the ten vehicle harnesses out of the vehicle. The harness that you mention is the dash harness.

There are a ton of wires for the full radio options, plus the console options. It is extremely unlikely that you could add those and have it work properly. I am not using my 99 with it's console, it's a work truck for me, so I have that console connector tucked behind an ashtray. I had to cut and splice eight wires there to make my rear speakers function. Each wire is important, and they run all over the dash, the backside.

I would suggest two possibilities, first contact a few of the radio companies who make adapters to fit radios etc. There are some adapters that can help to add some features. My 98 Mountaineer had no changer, but a mid level radio like yours. A previous owner had an adapter harness installed behind the radio, so it connects the radio wiring to a Mach radio, and an OEM changer in the console. There are no markings on the adapter, but it may be the type which could help you. It wouldn't help with the rear seat controls, my truck did have those(wires) already.

Secondly you could go about swapping the whole dash harness, which is a big job. If the price was good enough, that would be a decent idea. Basically any options are dependant on the dash harness. If you went to find a dash harness, it would have to have all of the features needed, like steering wheel controls, the message center, etc. Good luck,

Thanks much CDW! You've told me what I wanted to know.

This is a 1st vehicle for my daughter. R & R the dash harness and the $$ of a used harness is not worth having the rear air and radio controls. It's usually the dogs in the back and their paws don't work the controls too well anyway.

I'll plan to use the long - Type B console and front air box cover since I need one anyway. I'll jumper the cigarette lighter wiring to have a place to charge cell phones.

If anyone has any sources for a Clarion CD Changer adapter cable, I'd appreciate the tip.

Cheers and Thanks a bunch !!

Good Jim, I hope that you can find the adapter cable with little trouble. It may end up to be like mine in my 98, it plugs into one of the factory radio conncetors, and has two which go to the OEM radio, plus a very long cable for the changer. I plan to try to lead that cable to a quarter panel mounted music keg(10gb).

Curious also, what color is that interior? I need a matching color of ashtray for my 99, I have the dark gray interior. Any chance you have the match to mine? Regards,

Mine is the light gray interior. The ashtry is broken too. When you pull it out, it falls all the way out. The stops were broke.

That's another reason to use the long console and ditch the broken part.

FYI, Anyone looking for a CD Changer harness for the Factory HU to factory CD Changer. (99 Explorer - Premium Sound Radio/Cass/CD and Clarion 6CD changer.

An upgrade harness is available from http://radiosandmore.com/. The PN is XU3F-14588-AB (6 ft) and DB (16 ft). They are the same $$. It is $44.84 shipped overnight with tax. The folks were awesome to deal with.

On a more sour note, my speaker order from http://www.autotoys.com/ is still hung in processing after 3 days. No replys to emails, Live Support is Offline. No phone # to call. I really wished I had paid a little more and went with Crutchfield or another site. The speaker adapters I ordered from Crutchfield (after the speakers) was shipped the next day (with prompt email notices) and will be here tomorrow.
