Hi guys,

Have a '99 Explorer Sport 4.0 OHV. Has the automatic 4WD setup, from my reading here looks like it's the 44-05? transfer case.

It's been sitting for a few months, and the battery ran down. I replaced the battery and fired it up today to stretch its legs. As soon as I turned it on, I noticed the 4WD High light was on. When parked the explorer was operating in 2WD and switch was on Auto. With the light on, moving it through the range (Auto/4H/4L) produced no changes--only 4H stays illuminated and no noises heard. I did a few low speed donuts and confirmed that it was in fact in 4H.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

put it in nuetral and run the 4wd switch thru its positions slowly and listen for the transfer case shift motor .if you dont hear the motor changing modes then the motor isnt working or you somehow lost power to the motor .

thats what i would do first .

you could grab a vom and see if theres any voltage at the motor too.this would require a helper.

Hey Joe,

Thanks for the reply. I figured it out this afternoon. The knob was cracked, allowing the it to turn without changing the 4WD setting
