Now that our 2001 4.0L SOHC V6 has finally died, and will not be repaired, I may be on the hunt for another 99-01 V8 Explorer or Mountaineer. I'm leaving this decision to my daughter, but I'm up for another V8. We'll see what she decides. For now I've given her my red 2000 Mountaineer to use with strict instructions: keep it clean, you pay the insurance, no eating, drinking or smoking in it or I'll take it back.

I can feel my Craig's List spider-senses tingling already... lol

Impressive...I thought I was overdoing it with 2 Explorers..you will have 4!

BTW I thought 2001 models had the 4.6L V8, no?

No. the 2001's still had the old 5.0's. As far as I know, 2002 was the first year for the 4.6.

As you can tell, I love these trucks and amassing knowledge on how to fix them takes the anxiety out of doing repairs on a relatively new vehicle (plus I can try parts from one while diagnosing problems on another). being a retired OG, I find new vehicles to dang complicated to work on, lol

Where you finding these RWD Explorers? I never see them come through auction. I've been wanting one for almost 2 years.

They are fairly common on the Atlanta Craig's List. I must admit I got snookered on my last purchase. The ad said RWD, the seller said it was RWD when I asked, and while I looked over the truck pretty well, I took my son-in-law's word for it that he had checked and found it to be RWD. Well, after I got it home and up in the air, it turned out to be an AWD. I wasn't thrilled, but so far so good. no problems with it at all.

Look down south where it doesn't snow. Down there, AWD is just some unnecessary added expense. When you live in a state where it snows, it is actually useful.

+1 on above two comments. Lots more RWD down here - and there is very little rust!! My '97 has spent it's whole life in Georgia and there is zero rust.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that combs Craigslist daily looking for explorers.

He's had that for sale for about 6 months now. I went and looked at it and it's an absolute mess. It started out he wanted 5500 for it and he's slowly gone down. He's been going to finish it this entire time. He was evasive about the title to. I'm not sure what year it is but I do know it must have been wrecked. My concern is the tranny has sat for a decade so who knows what shape it's in.

agree 100% on both counts. my '01 Explorer and '00 Mountaineer are unbelievably rust free underneath. they're a pleasure to work on. even the XTL i'll be scrapping is totally rust free.

Frankentruck for sure. the speedo may say low miles, but I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot poll. no doubt started as at least 1 totaled truck, if not 2. i'd like the seats out of it though.

Lol I just added a 97 xlt 5.0 black with tan interior to my driveway but its gonna be my little brothers first car next week.
