I just finished replacing the fuel pump on my stepsons 1997 Explorer. I found this forum by searching for an alternate method of replacing the fuel pump. Having done several in tank pumps before, I did not want to go through dropping the fuel tank. It seems,in Canada, these pumps always seem to go in the dead of winter with a full tank of fuel! Therefore,I thought I would cut an access panel in the truck but had no idea where to cut, clearances or special tools I might need. I put in the heading on the computer-access panel for 1997 Explorer fuel pump-which took me to this site and a contribution by another member complete with pictures and measurements. I'll never drop a tank again! Thank you very much for posting all of that information. It proved to be extremely valuable to me,without it I'm sure I would still be under the truck(not something you want to be doing Christmas Day) I used lots of "Red Green" tape around the opening but still managed to "donate" 1 quart of type O positive to the repair. Thank you again for your contribution to this site. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all. Bill,Sechelt,BC,Canada
