okay, here's the deal I have a 460 aluminum block out of a lincoln at my house with aluminum heads that my father was thniking of putting in his replica AC cobra. He has decided that he wants to go the more authentic route and put a different engine in. Here I have this light 460 which I would hope wouldn't weight down the Tbars too much because of less weight and what kind of mods would be required under the hood? I know that with the 5.0L its kind of a tight squeeze. It would be pretty cool to have a 460 in an explorer sport.

the ranger station's website was sayin after I took a look that a BB motor is not recommended for a ranger(explorer's got basically the same everything) unless its for serious racing... they do not recommend at all for 4x4. Maybe I will jump on the band wagon and just do a 5.0 swap like everyone else.

First things first. Look and see what engine is REALLY out of that Lincoln. I have never seen an aluminum block/aluminum headed 460 in a Lincoln. If that is what you truly have, someone put it in aftermarket and you have a very valuable piece. What year Lincoln are we talking? What model?

Are you talking about an aluminum 4.6?

Are you talking about an aluminum 4.6?

That's my guess. That should be a doable swap. But his previous post indicates he believes it to be the 460.

the 4.6L is quite wider than the 5.0L Look up some pics of them side by side, the 5.0 looks kinda small in comparisan. The 5.0L i think would be easier. Back last year i was going to do a V8 swap (Plans changed end up moving to Texas) and when i looked up info on therangerstation.com (been a member there for years but havnt been on in a while lol) i seen some pics of swaps and the 4.6L seemed to be a tight fit, atleast alot tighter than the 5.0L.

the aluminum block I am almost positive is out of a lincoln and the heads I know are after market. I would go double check but I am up at school and not at home.

If you have an aluminum big block and heads, PM me with a price, condition, and pics. Seriously...

it does not look like the swap into the explorer is a good idea based on what the ranger station says about only recomended for serious racing apps. and not for 4x4. This will not be for sale, if I can talk my dad into it maybe I can talk him into letting me transplant it into the foxbody instead of that carb'ed 302... thats more of a practial swap I would think.

Why the need for such a big engine for 4x4? If torque is what you need, work on the gearing instead - it'll probably cost less then trying to fit that boat anchor - and less weight you have to lug around on the trail.

What year lincoln did you get the motor out of? I too have never heard of lincoln offering an all-aluminum 460 big block in any lincoln let alone one with aluminum heads. If I remember, 91' up lincoln town cars and maybe grand marquis had 4.6 2V motors and between 93'-98' a lincoln mark VIII had a 4.6 4V motor. Those could be all-aluminum? Don't quote me but I should be close. All other years down from the above mentioned had the pushrod 302's, 351's and the 460 itself didn't continue after 79'.

IMO, putting in a BB into a explorer would be way to much work. also, if i am not wrong, isn't a 4.6 wider then a BB? putting a 460 into a fox body isn't too complicated. i have a 429 in a 81 capri, and at first glance, you would swear it came from factory.

429 and 460 are basically the same block family just different stroke. at one time you could buy an aluminum bb from Ford that could be bored, stainless steel sleeved and stroked to 800+ cubes. i bet that would purr nicely in an explorer with a high lift short duration cam (low rpm torque)
do it, i dare ya. lol
