Ok, we figured out what the burnt smell and loss of power was in my 95 x ltd. It was the serpentine belt, it was totally shot, suprised it didn't snap or anything.

It only cost like 30 bucks to fix and it was a major pain in the ass.

Anyways, we checked all the pulleys and bearings and stuff. The A/C COMP failed. the clutch? (the part the belt is on, rattles, and is visibly loose.) That would explain why my a/c doesnt work in the summer.

I would like to replace it, I don't want it to lock up on me sometime down the road.

-How long do you think my belt will last?
-What are the chances it will lock up?
-Do I have to replace the whole A/C COMP unit?
-Can I just replace the parts below? (check image)

Napa has the part listed above with FS10 compressor for about 250 but thats remanufactured. about another 100 for new.

*notes

i'm not sure how old the original fan belt was, i'm assuming it was factory.

is there a write up to fixing this? if not, how hard is it?

any help would be appreciated.

Most likely the clutch/coil got smoked because of a failed compressor.

If that's the case you will need to replace compressor, FOT, acumulator, and install a a/c filter kit.

It's critical to prevent the pieces of the old compressor from getting into the new one or your new compressor might only last a few weeks.

well..... the clutches on A/C units can fail.... then again the FORD compressor on the Explorer wasn't all that hot in any event. Can you replace the clutch unit alone? Yes, with the right tools. Is this a DIY project ? Hmmm probably not - for the typical Saturday mechanic anyway. Depending on the mileage you would be better off replacing the entire compressor and recharging the unit. BUT.. if the compressor shows signs of the black death (blackened oil etc) then a system rebuild would be in order along with a flush. You CAN do this yourself, or can hire it done. Skipping any steps can lead to re-failure. Check the useful posts section - I did a lengthy post on AC issues you might find helpful:
