When the a/c is on and the clutch engaged there is a pretty loud clicking sound. The a/c cools just fine so I am assuming that the clutch bearing is going out. Does anyone have any experience with this and know how the clutch comes off to replace the bearing? I'm guessing there can't be much too it but I haven't had a chance to crawl under there and look yet. Thanks!

can you describe the clicking a little more? is it every 5 to 8 seconds, or is it a constant click, click, click, click, click?

when my refrigerant level is low, the compressor clicks on very loudly, builds pressure in the system for about 5 seconds, then clicks off very loudly. despite being low on r134, the ac is still pretty cold. it only goes warm when it's very very low on refrigerant.

a properly filled ac system results in much quieter compressor operation.

Well the compressor seized and actually blew the case apart. There is a 6 inch crack in it. Needless to say, I replaced it. The air now blows 31 degrees and will run you out.

The AC unit on our 05 4.0L 4x4 XLT just started this pretty loud clicking sound when engaged (e.g. loud when look right at it, but can also hear it in the car with the windows down). The frequency seems to be timed to about each rotation of the AC clutch. When off, the click stops. Is the compressor about ready seize up, or just the clutch?

Sounds like it's low in refrigerant. Get one of the refill kits from your favorite parts store and hook it up and see what the pressure is. My guess...low. Add refrigerant and see if clicking goes away. Refill kit is lot cheaper that a new compressor. If compressor fails, you have to suction down system after replacing and unless you have a vacuum pump you are going to have to send it out which cost more money. I start with the refill kit. Post back to others can learn from your experience.

OK, of course. I will top it off tomorrow with a fill kit.
