Hey guys, I have the 4.6l V8 explorer, 2002 Limited, no rear a/c. I am getting a new compressor and wanted to bolt it in myself. It's already been evacuated, so it's just down to unbolting it. Are there any special tools or ways I need to do this? It seems hard to get to on the motor. Do you remove the airbox to get under it?? I looked online for step by step and could only find older model ford how-tos. I am trying to get it done asap tomorrow morning and have it charged before its 100* out. Sooner help the better, thanks all!

Can't help you on the procedure to R&R the compressor on your Ex, but plan on getting the AC system evacuated again, once you do install the new compressor. You cannot pre-evacuate the AC system prior to opening the system up to outside air to change a component(like a compressor) and expect it to be clean and air free to fill with new refrigerant when done. You have the system "evacuated" and checked for leaks while holding a constant vacuum only "after" you are done changing parts to the system. Then once all that is done and okay, the system can be re-charged with new refrigerant. As far as special tools needed, a set of HI and Low side pressure gauges would come in handy and a thermometer to check air vent temps after you get everything up and running. If you really don't know what you are doing with this stuff, you might want to let someone with more knowledge about AC systems do it for you and get it right the first time.
