A?C problem got me stumped

OK, I’ll try and explain what’s going on the best I can. My A/C has a slow leak, I know the low pressure filler valve leaks but with the cap on its pretty air tight but it will deplete after a month or so. I have a set of gauges and I keep it charged based on a temperature vs pressure chart I have. In any case it blows very cold air when it is charged up.

However when driving the compressor will only run for a few minutes then stop. When I first start the truck the A/C compressor will engage and it will stay engaged if I carefully keep the RPM under 2000. I will run for a long time like this. Now if the RPM goes over 2000 it will 90% of the time kick off and the only way to get it to come back on is to turn off the A/C and wait at least 60 seconds. This does not always work, sometimes it need to be off for 3 minutes or so, or longer. It will never kick back on until I turn it off first, however (to vent or off) There are times when it will not come back on utill I park the truck for 30 minutes or so but this only happens 10% of the time. Now if the temp is below 90* it will often operate above 2000 rpm, sometimes for an hour or so driving.

Based on this I was thinking the high pressure was getting to high, but with gauges on in 92+ temp the high side never goes over 225psi, low about 40psi.

I pulled the compressor relay and jumped pins 3 and 5 and the compressor kicks on. When it is experiencing the problem jumping the pins will NOT turn the compressor on. So this indicates to me it is the compressor clutch or wiring, but then why would it need to be cycled off in order to run again? The fact that it needs to be cycled off indicates the computer is involved, not a mechanical or electrical connection.

The problem is very consistent and I can reliably reproduce it over and over again. When driving when the compressor kicks off I turn it off, wait a min or 2 and turn it on and unless the temp is over 95 it will usually come on for a few minutes (even at 3000 rpm) until I have to do it again.

My neighbor's box truck was experiencing almost the same thing. We hunted for a while until another guy suggested we ohm out the compressor clutch coil when it was acting up. Sure enough the windings were open. When everything was shut down and cooled off, continuity returned, and normal system operation resumed. Let the coil get hot, and it would kick back out again.

That makes sense I suppose. I'm looking at clutches and for just a bit more you can get a compressor and clutch, but then I would need a shop to do it. I guess I'll just bring it in and let the a/c pros do it and charge me a bundle. :salute:
