A/C problems

Alright heres the problem. The A/C will be on in all modes except for the one that is left of the off position which is when it blows at your face. All other settings the A/C compressor turns on (I can hear it) and the air will be freezing cold if I have it on cold. If I have it on warm I still hear the compressor turning on but I feel it really hot but if I move the hot setting to cold it turns freezing cold.

So here is my question. Is my A/C running even though I have the hot setting on when running in these modes? If so how can I fix it. And doesn't it effect my performance since running A/C takes my MPG down?

Could this be an electrical problem? or something as simple as a fuse?

Or perhaps my whole A/C system is fudged up?

AC should only come on in AC and defrost. SOunds electrical... in winter you can just unplug the connector to the AC clutch (now and then plug it in to exercise the AC compressor) and wait til next spring to fix it.

Maverick, the A/C compressor running on all modes except for the Panel (Vents) is normal. On '97or '98 and later, it runs in all positions except for Panel and Floor.

Ok I read both your posts but im not sure what to think. Could someone confirm that it runs in all modes for my model?

The one in question is a 1996 XLT
I would check with my 93 but I removed the A/C.

And if it does run in all modes, won't it make my MPG suffer since its on? Thats what I would think.

Your '96 is working exactly as designed. It only runs when outside temp is above certain degree. Doesn't affect gas mileage all that much.
