Lately I've been noticing that, when i have the climate control set to cool, air comes out of the vents that is colder than the outside air. This happens when the A/C isn't turned on and i've just got the blower on. I've also noticed that water is dripping from the undercarriage. Is there any way that the A/C could somehow be stuck in the "on" position?

I can control the temp ok with the knobs, but it just seems like a waste if the A/C is running and i'm just covering it up.

Your compressor runs in every position except Floor and Vent.

This may seem like a stupid question, but why have the compressor run when the operator does not turn on the A/C? Why have an A/C switch if it is going to come on automatically?

My compressor ran even when in the off possistion so I wired a switch straight to the compressor!:D

It runs so that it cycles the freon through your system. This way it runs in the winter time, and keeps stuff moving. It also runs while in the defrost position because the dry air from the air conditioning system helps clear up your windows faster.

It is nice to be able to turn it off when you want it off, though.

Actually I think on mine the compressor only runs when it is in the Defrost setting or the Max AC, or I push the button. I dont think it runs when its in Panel, FLR/PNL, floor, or FLR/DFST

With A/C equiped Explorers, the A/C will turn on when the climate control thermostat is turned down lower than ambient temperature(outside). It will do this in all modes except floor and vent like addkev said. The compressor will turn on at all temps in the DEF and DEF/FLR mode.

taxxman, if your compressor ran constantly then you had a bad relay. That would be my guess. The compressor running constantly is not normal.

i know. I replaced my accumulator and condensor last year and since then the compressor has been funny, but I don't really care enough to troubleshoot it. It was easier to put a switch on the sensor for the compressor to keep it from coming on. Makes mine different too!:D

could be low on freon...whatever they use

No that is why I thought to put the switch on. If it is low on freon it will not come on, that is what the sensors are for.

Actually if it's low it will cycle trying to get it up to pressure.

You and I just can't ever agree.:D When mine had a leak last summer the compressor would not come on unless the sensor on the accumulator detected enough freon. You can trick it with a paper clip on the sensor contacts to see if the compressor is bad. But it will not run when there is not enough pressure, this is to keep the compressor from burning up.

Well then you have a retarded compressor!:D

I won't argue with that.

I know it's an old thread, but you folks seem to know A/C and my question relates to some of your discussion.

When I set my climate control to a temperature (say 72), does the compressor cycle on & off to keep it at that temperature, or do the air blend doors move to control the temperature?
