Hi all, Ive got a 1996 Explorer sport 4x4 4.0 ohv 5 speed. Aside from the typical VSS problems. and haveing 200k+ miles on it its a fairly solid explorer. A couple of issues I'm haveing are: Mazda 5 speed. When I'm decelerating and I leave it in gear it makes a very loud mid pitched growl that stays unless I put it in neutral or stop, sometimes downshifting and giving it a quick hit of the throttle makes it go away. we already did the throw out bearing so I have no clue what could be makeing the noise. second, Last time I was driving to work in the snow I had it in 4wd, A couple miles from my destination the 4 low light came on with the 4wd light then they both started flashing and went out. then the 4wd high light came back on. It did it one more time during the trip but it operational now. Anybody experience this? All help and suggestions are greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

If you are getting flashing 4wd lights, the trans is throwing codes. You'll have to find out what they are, and they may also relate to the growling noise. Something funny may be going on with your 4wd system/transfer case also.

Well when we did the throw out bearing My tech said that the transfer case didn't spins as free as he thought it should. Is there anything in the transfer case that could make that kind of noise? or cause that issue. I really miss my manual shift 4wd, and lock outs.

I know exactly what you mean about the manual system. Wish my Ex was manual. About the noise, how is the fluid level? Just a starting point, not hearing the noise.

Fluid is full. and I understand it's kinda difficult to pinpoint something without physically hearing it. I thought it was the throwout bearing because it kind of sounded like that but we replaced it and still noisey, shift fork bushing stuck somewhere? It does makes the noise inconsistantly.
