How many quarts does it take when changing tranny fluid?

I want to install a tranny fluid drain plug, where is the best spot to put it?

If I added a external tranny filter do you do anything with the internal filter since you won't need to take pan off anymore?

What is the best additive for a tranny that is starting to slip?

I need to replace my steering rack, parts store wants around $130 for refurbished but I have a local junk yard that said he would pull one for $65. I'd rather spend the extra $65 on other needed parts, what should I do?

Thanks in advance for any responce

I can't help with the tranny, but as far as the rack goes, I'd go with the rebuilt one from the store. You can also try some online places like rockauto.

Post your tranny questions in the Transmission and T-Case forum you will get alot more response.

I've got the same setup..
I think when I just dropped the pan it took about 9 or 10 quarts, The total capacity is 12quarts, however if you have any extras like an external filter or additional cooler that will add to the amount.

while your under there I would recommend re-torquing the bands.

AFA location of the drain plug I put mine in the center of the sump area for the filter. that way there is no clearance issue and it is at the lowest portion of the pan so most of the oil drains out. There are a lot of threads on this topic in the tranny section (search on 5r55e drain plug)

Are you going to change your filter while your in there? it is recommended

The internal filter needs to stay, and you need to continue to change it even if you have an external filter. The internal filter serves as a sump pickup for the main pump, so without it the pump will not get fluid. Additionally the internal filter is your main line of defense for particles, the external will just catch more of the smaller stuff, and anything that is stuck in the coolers. Keep both and change both...

Oh and be sure to use lock tight and ATV sealer on the drain plug, you don't want that thing coming loose and leaking.
