I am having problems with my transmission again. I had that thing fixed, to the tune of $1,500, 5 months and 8,000 miles ago. That fix involved a complete torque converter overhaul and various other things. It supposedly is covered by a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. I have a '92 Eddie Bauer.

Now, the transmission is acting up again. When I go to shift after it has been sitting for a few hours, it will pause for a couple seconds and then finally shift while making a very loud clunking sound. After that initial problem, it will shift fine and continue to shift fine as it warms up. This happens whether or not I am shifting from P to R or from P to D. If I let it sit for a short time (an hour) it will shift without too much problem, but you can tell that as it sits longer, the more problems it has. The very worst is when I go to shift in the morning and after work - after it has been sitting for quite a while. The problem does not occur while driving. It runs through those gears without any problem.

Any thoughts?? At the very least I want to have an idea of the problem before I go back to where I had the service done. I don't want them trying to screw me over with the warranty. Thanks!!!

Ever since I've had mine it has always paused before going from P to R. From P to D though, it usually just pops right in. Sounds like it is just building up enough pressure to change gears, but I don't know if that means anything is going wrong or not. I'd call or go back by and ask just to be sure.

Did you check the fluid level? Just a thought.

I would just send it back and tell them when the problem happens and then they can try to recreate it and fix it. Also where did you go to get your tranny replaced? How did you get a 3 year 36,000 mile warentee?! Thats a VERY nice warentee. I only got a 2 year 24,000 mile warentee from ford on a NEW transmission..not rebuilt.

I got my transmission fixed at Cottman Transmission. They are a national company and I thought that would be the best for me since I will probably move from my current location in another 1 1/2 years. The 3 year warranty was more money, but I think it will be worth it with that piece of crap Ford transmission.

I called around and talked to some people about my problem. I think it is a defective hard seal in the clutch pack.

I have noticed that since the weather warmed up that the problem isn't quite as bad. Anyway, I'm taking it in tommorrow to get fixed. It should all be covered under the warranty. That is a good thing because I don't feel like dropping any more money on that transmission.

Double check the fluid level. If that's OK go ahead and run it back into them. Often on colder days the fluid gets a tad bit thicker and takes a minute to build up the preasure to shift. I would let them take a look at it though.

Fluid level is ok. I checked that this weekend. It was at the right level and the color was good.

Thanks everyone.
