a little help..

i have a 99 x sport 4.0 sohc in it, for the last couple months i have had a lot of chatter coming from the engine bay on a cold start up.. it would go away after 5 or 6 seconds and run fine.. the colder it got the worse it was.. occasionally it would start up and be quiet as can be and run great... well this particular morning started up with no chatter ran fine as normal so i backed out the driveway and started up the road about a 1/4 mile down the road something happened.. now there is a constant noise coming from the engine its not a tick not a knock just sounds like chatter... the higher the rpm the louder and faster the noise gets... i had no choice but to drive it to work and back home but its been parked since, i went and bought another vehicle and the x is just sitting but i would still like to get it fixed... also i noticed on my way home from work that day that my oil pressure gauge was flucuating jumping from middle all the way to just dropping completely down to nothing... i know people say that typically that is just a bad sending unit but i never had problems with the jumping needle until then.. if the oil pump went bad i know the damage is already done from driving it.. im just trying to figure out if i should junk this thing or if its worth fixing...

If you're not making payments, and it's yours outright, save it If there is damage so extensive, save it! Just get it fixed if you feel it's worth it.... If not, go for it, and upgrade

yeah i got my moneys work out of it, payed 3000 for it 2 years ago with 120,000 miles on it put nearly 40000 on it in those 2 years with almost no maintenance besides oil changes and a thermostat... so any way it goes no hard feelings on the x... may be a project, may just part it out and see what kind of cash i can get out of her... or maybe just fix it..

Sounds like another SOHC tensioner victim. There is a fix for this but I'm wondering if pieces are now in the oil pan and clogging the pump. Others can chime in.

I agree. It definitely sounds like the timing chain tensioner rattle. I would test the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge to see if it's just a sender issue or if there is an actual oil pressure issue. That's some coincidence though if it is just an oil pressure sender problem. I wouldn't doubt it that the oil pump screen is clogged from the tensioner pieces like 96eb96 mentioned.
