Well my '06 Exploder....exploded. Not really, but its dead. First indication was some stumbling, then a code (Misfire Cyl #1 ). Got it home, checked the #1 plug, and the gap was really big. So new plugs in, ran fine for a day. Then I got a ticking sound in the valve cover for cyl #1 .

Dropped in an oil flush, then changed the oil and filter. Started it, ticking still there. Thought I'd leave it overnight to see if the Rislone (added with the new oil) would loosen up what sounded like a stuck lifter (lash adjuster).

Started it the next morning, ran about 15-20 seconds, and CRACK. Something obviously broke, and now the engine won't fire at all. It'll crank, but not one cylinder will fire. Its also really, really noisy.....like parts that are supposed to work together.....aren't.

So, I'm just having the whole engine swapped with a reman, ~4,700 installed, with a 3 year warranty.

Does that seem like a fair price?

It falls in a ballpark. Who is doing it for you ?

also, sorry for what happened to your engine. Nobody wants to go thru that but it just happens. How many miles ? I would be curious to know what failed. Sometimes shops do not even spend time to open up the motor to see inside.

I don't know, other than what I described. With 186k on it, and this is my second 4.0 SOHC that croaked, I'm not interested in fixing it.

If the shop opens it up and tells me what happened, I'll post it here.

With that many miles on a V6, I would bet that it was the timing chain guides that let go and ended up causing other issues. Sad that it happened, but good to hear that you got that many miles out of it before a major failure.

I'd think that price is a bit much for motor swap. I've seen re manufactured motors go for around $2500. pulling a motor out and sticking another back in is cake if you have a shop. Around here, NYC, its about $500-$700 to swap a motor.
