i have a 94 Explorer, 4wd, 4.0 L, auto, 169k mi. recently replaced, dpfe sensor, IAC valve and air cleaner temp sensor, cleaned maf senser, always baby it(plugs, wires, routine oil changes, air filter, etc.) Issue started this past winter and seems to get worse the hotter it gets. No codes are set as a result of this issue that is described as follows: Starts up first thing in the morning and runs like a champ through traffic for 30+ minutes...that is until i turn the vehicle off for 5 min or so. I then start the vehicle and it idles and runs really rough at various speeds for 10 mi or so. Since the outside temp is now 92 deg versus Minnesota winter temps, after the vehicle is shut off and restarted, it barely gets me down the street without stalling and really a rough running. At no time is there a code set or any other indication there is trouble. Once the vehical has cooled off for 1 hour or so, it runs like new again until it is shut off again. I have almost given up hope so please, HELP!

Vapor Lock? Not very common with today's engines, but it can happen. Just an Idea.

What do I do? It seems the problem is more drastic today at 92 deg. and 90% humidity. Stalled in traffic and was left stranded for 2 hours while the vehicle cooled down. How do I possibly repair a vapor lock?

Hate to play guessing games, but it could be a sign of a failing fuel pump. It usually runs good when engine is cold, but when the fuel pump warms up it fails. Check your fuel pressure with a gauge after it stalls and see if you have fuel to it. If no pressure, then you know it's the pump.

I might say the computer. My 86 T Bird did that. Had to put a bag of ice cubes on it to get home. Just a thought.

I sincerely appreciate all the help I can possibly get as I approach the end of my rope with this Ford Explorer. To recap the problem: Definitely temperature sensitive, starts like a champ in the morning (regardless of outside temp), as I proceed driving in normal city traffic for 30+ min., it runs superb (I run BP supreme fuel). After reaching my destination as expected, I turn the vehicle off. 5-10 minutes passes and I attemp to start the vehicle. Spits and sputters as I rev the engine it does not smooth for many seconds. If I am feeling bold after a minute or so of reving the engine, I proceed in to traffic with usually very sluggish performance, that's if I am lucky, I get to my next destination. On very hot and humid midwestern days, the vehicle will move about a block before stalling completely (usually right smack in the middle of a major intersection during rush hour). If this happens, generally I can expect to sit for 1-2 hours before the vehicle will run well enough to get back in to traffic. What a ***** this is, perhaps anyone can see why I am at the end.

This problem did not occur last year when I was in Montana. It started when I moved to Minnesota (another story entirely) end of last August. The problem I described above was present to a lesser degree in the winter, but never left me stranded. Problem has surely escalated in the warmer Minnesota months. I have babied this 94 xlt from the beginning with many problems related to relays (eec, and fp), and 2 fuel pumps replaced. Troubleshoot the recent issue I have replaced the following components:
DPFE sensor, air cleaner Temp sensor, and the IAC valve. I have cleaned the MAF sensor to extinguish a check engine light, and when I say that I have babied this thing, I mean all the routine maint., plugs and wires, PCV valve, air filters and the like. NO CODES are set as a result of this strange behavior. At no time is the computer aware of the poor running condition that can leave me stranded for hours. I am starting to suspect perhaps there is a faulty ignition device....but what about a sensor that reports faulty information to the computer, but is within operating range so that a code is not set??? HELP PLEASE!!
