After researching the treasure trove of information for this site. I decided to do the M5HD swap. I have a 93 XLT with 134k miles (Assuming by the vehicle condition when I bought it, showed wear and tear of 100k vehicle and not 200k, since there is no number for 100k). I bought it two years ago with 122k and it is my DD for work.

I was very blessed and found an HD transmission off of car-part.com at a salvage yard about 60 miles from my house. It came off an 99 Explorer with 29068 miles! Assuming that information is correct because it was submitted by the parts house.

Instead of just changing the pilot bearing that was bad and swapping the transmission (whining in 4th gear and louder in 5th gear) I have bought all new parts from AZ. I started to order the HD clutch set off of Ebay but AZ gives a lifetime warranty. The only part I have not picked up is the slave cylinder which I believe I should add new as well since all else is new.

My tale or so to speak is that when I was disconnecting the transmission from the truck I noticed that there is no way to install the speedometer in the new transmission. The new transmission has the sticker on it that reads F87A EA D340901 I have tried researching to see what I can come up with online and do not find anything.

Can the tail piece off the old transmission be removed and installed with the new transmission?

I have never opened a transmission so I am not sure if this is a simple swap or not? I need to get this installed back in this weekend as well as swap in an electric fan since my factory plastic one is all cracked up. Another thread for another day.

My clutch apparently needed changing? Looks like some excessive heat here

Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Your pics aren't showing for me, so I can't tell much. Are both trannys 4x4, or 4x2, and not one 4x4 and one 4x2?
Another thought, your 93 uses a speedo cable that plugs into the trans, the 99 uses VSS I believe.
Also, I recommend using a Timken pilot bearing, if yours isn't. I remember reading that somewhere when I did my clutch, and I did a visual compare between the timken and some other brand, the off brand was noticably cheaper in quality. I figured that given it's location and amount of work to get to it, I wanted the best I could get!

I am not sure why my pics werent posting
I have attached the URLs and maybe that helps.

These are 4x2 transmissions. I looked into another pilot bearing and the other one I could find locally was a National brand which I know is comparable but it isnt a Timken.

I hope you can see at least the links to the pics now. Can the two tail ends be swapped without a problem?
