My 1994 Explorer (Limited/Eddie Bower) with 158K on the original A4LD has been giving me trouble. It started out as a slight delay in engagement often requiring a slight tap on the gas to get it into gear. Reverse is fine as are all the forward gears, shifting when they're supposed to. The situation has worsened to the point of often requiring 2-3K RPM's resulting in a very unhealthy engagement. A cold engine always requires less revving to engage than when it's at normal operating temperature.
I've gone through the archives here and have come across a few similar situations. I've read the A4LD Rebuild Diary and the Valve Body Rebuild Guide a couple of times each, and am planning to do the Valve Body as soon as my Transgo Kit, Boost Valve Kit, and Gaskets arrive. I've already checked for vacuum leaks, replaced the vacuum modulator, and replaced the Reverse/Low Servo Gaskets. There was a nice build-up of grey sludge in the pan but not too much in the way of metal shavings on the magnets.
Do you guys think that a Valve Body Cleaning/Rebuild has a chance at clearing up the problem? Also, with the Valve Body off, can the two adjustable bands be adjusted from under the vehicle without further dis assembly?
Thanks in advance!
Steve
