Greetings,
I have a 1992 XLT 4.0L 4WD that has 150,000 miles with an overdrive problem. I think it's an A4LD tranny. I do not plan on working on this one myself unless it's something simple like a 3/4 solonoid. I'm just not sure that I'm getting an accurate story from the tranny shop that I had examine it. They said "it's something inside" and that "it needs a complete overhaul or replacment" but would not go into any detail. I don't believe they even dropped the pan cause they did not charge me for fluid, a filter, or a gasket. I am going to take it somewhere else soon to get a second opinion. Anyway... here goes.
Reverse is always fine. If you shift from park straight to L1, L2, or drive, the tranny goes into gear and pulls good. In drive it seems to shift from 1st to 2nd and to 3rd (drive) just fine with no slippage at all. If you go from Park (or neutral) to Overdrive, it's like there is nothing there at all. Sometimes it seems like it is trying to engage, but basically massive slippage. OD was working fine until recently, then suddenly one day, no OD.
No fluids on the ground under the vehicle but after you drive accross town (in drive) there is a smell of tranny fuild like it's getting hot. Checking the fluid.. No froth, no burnt smell, no hint of metal bits, and level is correct (maybe a bit high).
I have been reading other threads speaking about the 3/4 solonoid and the filter screen associated with it. Is there anything else that I might check before I concider a complete overhaul.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
