Why is the number of springs present in the overdrive piston 15 and not 20? You would think better distribution of pressure if it had the full amount present (assuming calibrated for that) and less likely to spin and be destroyed.

Stupid question of the day, what would happen if you put a full complement of 20 springs in there, what would the effect be?

That was an attempt to fix a problem with the retaining ring that was coming off. By taking out some springs it allows the clutch pack to apply quicker. But at the speed that the OD clutches apply the centrifugal force would send the retaining ring off. They made a redesigned retainer ring and started using all the springs again. Make sure you use the updated retainer. Removing return springs has been done for years in older transmissions to make the shifts feel quicker. Not able to do it so easy today with the PCM measuring time between shifts and adapting to what was programed.
