I just bought a 91 Explorer XL 2 Door 4x4 recently. It seemed like a good buy, and I really like it. Well recently I have noticed that the transmission is acting weird. If you leave it sit for awhile, or it is cold, it won't engange into any gear. It won't even engange into park sometimes. When it does this, it acts like it is in netural. Now when it warms up, the problem seems to go away. When it is warmed up thou, it seems to take some time to shift into gear. It shifts smooth and never had a problem with it slipping during driving conditions, but I am concered on what is wrong. I have researched on here for solutions and come up with many. What is your thoughts on this. To me I think it could be just a simple fix. What I would like to know is, what should I do first? Change fluid, filter, etc? I was thinking of also changing the Low/Reverse Servo Seal. Could this fix it? Any thoughts would be great.

are you confident that the fluid level is ok? Sounds rather classic of low fluid. If it is not "low", changing the fluid and filter might be the next easiest thing to try. While the low reverse servo seal is always problematic in high mileage A4LD's your symptoms seem a little extreme for that to be the sole cause (never say never though I guess).
