I have looked everywhere and cannot find the answer to this question. It is not in my Chilton's and I cant find it anywhere on the forums. I am sorry if it is blatently obvious to some but I am a little nervous putting in a new transmission for the first time on my own and I want to try to get everything just right.

Do the torque converter nuts need to be torqued down to a certain spec, and if so, what should they be tightened to? I know they are slightly triangular, but I dont know how that would affect whether or not they need to be specifically torqued and how much that would be.

Yes they do.... however finding a torque wrench to fit into the space you have means few if any ever get a torque wrench applied. For the A4LD the torque spec is 20-34 Ft lbs.

There, answer in less than 20 mins. Is this a GREAT site or what? Worth joining !

Could you please tell me where you got this information?

This site is definitely worth joining, except for the fact that I have no money. I have so little money that I haggled the price of my X down to $800 including all fees FROM A DEALER. All parts and even the transmission I got so far have been free.

Q. Could you please tell me where you got this information?

A. From the FORD Motor Company A4LD Reference manual.

I used my trained arm to torque mine down!!LOL

If you want more information without buying a Ford manual, download a Ford CD, or DVD from WWW.FordCDs.Com. Where did you get a free transmission? Which Ford dealer sold you a 13 year old vehicle? I see that you have 4 vehicles.

Where did you get a free transmission?
my 93 Eddie Bauer had the transmission replaced, it didn't shift right so the company we bought it from sent a new valve body, after that it didnt have reverse. The company then sent us another trans and torque converter, but in the mean time I fixed the no reverse problem so I had two good transmissions, one installed and one extra. I then bought my car and am in the process of installing the extra transmission. The old one from my car will be going back to the (transmission store?) for the core charge unless I can either rebuild it or sell it to someone else for more, since it seems to only need an Intermediate band to be fully functional.

I had been looking for a car to buy in Phoenix, AZ, but I had to leave town. After I left my dad saw the X on the lot and told me it was nice. He had a chat with the dealer but I couldn't make up my mind so he left a $50 deposit and they promised they wouldn't sell it for at least a day. After I slept on it, I decided I wanted it. I wired the other $750 of my car budget to my dad and told him to get it, even though I never saw it, since I know Explorers are so good. The asking price was like $1500, but it was a repo and they had already made their money on it, so my dad told them we would take it for $800 including all fees. They tried to ask more for it but they were desperate for the space and the cash was in hand. As far as I know the dealership was just one for used cars, not specifically a Ford dealership.
I see that you have 4 vehicles.
When I refer to "my" explorers you must keep in mind I am talking about my family's. the 91 belongs to my brother, the 93 Eddie Bauer is what my mom uses, the 93 2wd was perfect for my dad since it a lot of his travel time is on the highway, and the 94 is mine.

I got this pic well after I bought the car, but the pic is of it sitting at the dealership.
Pretty good for $800. You should see the interior!

Oh and, you are welcome.

Excuse me, I'm so sorry! I forgot to say thanks!

Hardly anybody has old vehicles where I live. They rust out, get totaled, die from pot holes, get stolen, or broken into. Since everybody is on top of each other, and most people park on the street, the bodies on a lot of vehicles are dented up. The wealthy people support the body shops, while the less fortunate display their vehicle's as a proud to be a Newy Yorker with body damage. In one way they are not really less fortunate since they still own those vehicles instead of them going into the junkyards.

should see my $500 explorer I picked up in january.Sweet, straight, new engine but had a bad tranny. My wife complained because the tranny was bad but it made it home 100 miles.Cleaned it up, installed the good tranny out my wrecked explorer and I have a nice ride for under $1000 into it.
