I remember reading a thread a while ago (and now can't find it).. about the internal filter of a ford tranny from a newer explorer being able to be installed in an a4ld tranny.

The post mentioned that the newer filter was actually a filter and not just a screen... Anyone remember anything about this thread or can anyone find it? I haven't been able to find it...

A filter for a 5R55E will fit it

So you can just ask for a filter to a 97 with a 4.0L engine. This filter is physically a little larger and has about 3-4 times the filter area of the the old metal screen. SPX makes and recommends these MicroFelt filers for the A4LD. They are available from bulkpart.com for only $10 vs $22 at Autozone. Only thing you need to know is if it has a short or long pickup tube. 4WD always has the long pickup tube. Be very careful mounting it because you are supposed to use a shorter bolt and/or new hardware so the bolt doesn't bottom out. The bolt head is recessed and it has fooled some people. The filter drops down a little and sucks in air causing strange shifts. At bulkpart the pan gasket must be ordered seperately. You can usually transfer the O rings from the old filter.

All Explorers MAY have the long pickup tube from one post I read. I've never seen a 2WD Explorer and would be interested in hearing from anyone who has changed the filter to verify the length of the pickup tube in the 2WD. The long pickup has very thin plastic which can be cut easily. Measure twice and cut once!
