I thought I would post a thread about my experience with my A4LD Transmission in my 1994 Explorer EB 4.0l.with 112k. I bought the truck from a friend for $2000 with the knowledge that the transmission shifted really late (i.e. 4000 RPM) Once it shifted into what I thought 2nd gear, it would do the same thing till it hit OD.
I searched and searched for a way to fix this thing with-out a rebuild, but after cleaning the Gov. and flushing the Trans, replacing the Vacuum modulator valve thingy on the side and resetting the kickdown cable I decided to give in and find me a good shop. I turned to the most unlikely source and found me a great guy in Columbus (more like 30 min. north of) who was fair and knowledgeable. If you want his name, let me know; I would like to keep it off here if at all possible. I'm real picky with my Mechanics, as you can see I like to do most the work myself, so this guy had to have my confidence. He worked out of a garage on the side of his house, but with 30 some year’s experience and being on his own for 5 of them I felt good going with him. Not to mention the 12/12 warranty.
Steve, (the mech.) looked it over and determined that the transmission was skipping 2nd gear and going right for 3rd. Here I thought it was going into 2nd but at a high RPM. The 2nd gear band had broken, and started to burn all the clutches and raise havoc in the transmission. I had a complete rebuilt, including Torque converter, OD servo pistons, intermediate servo pistons, sun shell and filter replaced for $1400. It has a 12/12 warranty, which makes me more comfortable, and it’s still the original trans, and not a reman. That you’re going to spend $800 on and like $400 for the install.
Like I said, I just wanted to give those of you an idea what you’re up against if trying those first few remedies fails you. Also this gives a good article to search on for those who may have questions about A4LD transmissions.
I'm happy with my service and the final product, I could do with a lower price, but that’s a rebuild for you.
Please feel free to respond, I’d like to hear what you have to say about this experience. If you would like to get Steve's number, I’d be more than happy to help you out.
Thanks
Greg
