Does anyone know what, if anything, is above the left rear wheel well? There's a decent size space between the interior and exterior panels, above the wheel well and below the tray beside the third row seats. I have a rather loud, intermittent noise that appears at low speeds or stopped and I think coming from here. Just trying to figure out if there's anything in there.

I don't know if there is anything other than wiring in there. What kind of noise do you hear? When say "stopped" do you mean just after coming to a stop or even when parked for a while?

It's loud, reasonably high pitched, and sounds almost electronic. I've had it start making noise while slowing down, after stopping with foot on brake, after stopping and shifting to park, and after startup while still in park. Typically it lasts only a few seconds with the longest being probably 20 seconds. If it starts while in drive, it can continue even while mashing the accelerator. My ex has 19,000 on it and just spent the last week at the dealership and they could only recreate it once, and they don't know what it is. I have to take it back to them later for them to look some more. Unfortunately, it's sporadic and I can't say do this, this, and this and it'll happen. They're trying to figure out what it is and I'm sure they will eventually; I'm just trying to see if I can point them in the right direction.

Unfortunately I don't have an Explorer to compare, yet. Is there a grill located in that area for ventilation? You may have to end up removing the cover in that area to check it out. From what you describe, it almost sounds as if it could be a motor or fan starting up and slowing down.

that area is birds nest back there, that's where the rear heating/ a/c system is located, by left I'm assuming on the drivers side. Try different settings on the rear climate control if its related.
