Hello everyone, just bought a 99 Expo, 5.0 AWD last night, and I have a question. The abs light is on. Now, the brakes feel very strong, and I usually smell the rear brakes when I get out of it. I think they may be dragging. Any input on this situation? what can I do? I hate warning lights.....:splat:

Could be the speed sensor on the rear diff.

Inspect the parking brake. (Not ABS related, but might be causing the feeling and smell) As for the ABS, it could be any of the 3 sensors you have on your truck... one is in the rear axle as mentioned, but the front two sensors that are into your wheel bearing assemblies go out more often than the rear because of bearing wear/failure leading to contaminates or an inacurate read from the hub.. in my experience anyways.... do you hear or feel any type of grinding or vibration from the front? Anything? It's pretty costly for you to get an ABS code read to you unless you know someone personally with the right type of scanner. It can tell you specifically which one.

Ill have to check the one in the back then, because I had another explorer years ago that had the front left wheel bearing go out, so I know exactly what that is. Sound and feeling are kind of hard to miss. If it is the Speed sensor, will it not affect my speedo, or shift points or anything?

Mine didn't, but I fixed it within a couple of days.

Regarding the speed sensor on the rear. This is related to the ABS light? My ABS light has been on for a couple of weeks, and I just discovered that I have what seems to be a hose hanging above the left side of my rear axle. I can see where it came off, but there are no wires inside or any fluid leaking. Is the hose related to the ABS light?

Negative, that's a breather hose for the rear diff.. you can easily fix it by cutting the rubber off the broken part and just sticking the hose back to the axle... might wanna get a longer hose n route it higher.. but that's another lil project for another time.. anyways.. good to know it's not hub related... check/replace the rear sensor and if the problem is still there.. you may have a controller issue? Your easiest way of finding out is scanning for ABS codes though..

I replaced the speed sensor on the rear differential, and that fixed the ABS warning light. I thought I would need some wet weather to check the anti-locks, but no need. The ABS are now hyper active. The ABS comes on at low speeds and low to moderate brake pedal pressure. Probably more annoying than the ABS warning light. This happen to any one else who replaced a speed sensor?

I recently had the same problem. Front brakes were shot.
Replaced with Brand new rotors and Premium pads.

Did not fix the problem.

Replaced the rear ABS Sensor $27.00 ...Problem solved.

i changed my front wheel bearing and my abs light went off, look into that.
