Hi there, I have a '93 Ford X, Whenever I use my brakes when its wet out, while on gravel, or while on rough roads I get a growling noise. I'm not sure if its supposed to be doing this or not, And My truck is constantly having brake issues. Any help would be much appreciated.

I also have a 93 x. I am having a similar problem. I get the growl but it doesn't have to be on a wet road. I have replaced the front and rear brakes. I have replaced the front brake hoses because they were dry rotted bad. I think I am having problems with my rear ABS sensor. Any help with this would be appreciated by both of us I am sure!!!

The "growl" you get along with the pedal kickback is the ABS system working.

If you DON'T get a "growl", when you stop hard on a loose or slippery surface, the ABS isn't working.

I know the ABS is supposed to "growl" on loose gravel or slippery conditions but I can be driving in a straight line on a dry road and hit the brakes and hear it kick in. And occasionally the light will flash on and stay on for a while.

The Gen 1 ABS is a joke. Get rid of it. You're better off learning how to drive when it's slick than relying on another useless nanny. Alot of the early ABS sucked.

The ABS can still kick on on a dry road if you stop hard enough.

If it's randomly engaging at times when there's no need for it, then you'd want to check the sensors on the front spindles and at the rear axle, along with the brakes and the sensor fins on the back of the rotors. You might swap the ABS relay with a good one to be sure it isn't something so minor as a sticky relay. Then the ABS control module would be next, swapping it out with a good one from a salvage yard or someone parting out in the for sale forum would be the way to go.

Maybe the single axle ABS on the 91-92's wasn't that great, but the ABS on the 93-94's is quite nice, at least with really good brakes and tires.
