ABS Not working

My '92 XLT has had the rear ABS light on for some time and they definitely don't work. I tried the diagnostics which involve grounding a lead under the dash and turning the key to receive a diagnostic code. But I couldn't get this procedure to give me the code I was looking for.

Anyone have experience with this? If I could figure out what was wrong and it's a quick fix I may go for it... otherwise I guess I'll keep pumping the brakes myself!

Mine is exactly the same. I had it diagnosed at the dealer and it's the Rear ABS valve/sensor (rabs valve). The part is around $230.00 I believe and for them to do it - $330.00

I opted not to have it repaired, cause the mechanic told me that I'd get much better braking performance without the rear abs...and since Ford completely screwed up by only putting them on the rear, then they don't make much of a difference anyway. Hell, I could care less if my rear wheels lock up...it's the front that I have control over and things can get scary when they lock up.

Thanks for the information. I agree that cost is excessive for the small benefit to be gained... I figure if it was a $30 part I might do it anyway!

For $230 you are getting extremely ripped-off. I have the same problem and I need to get the valve replaced. I called around town and found the RABS valve to be an average of $150 with a core. The cheapest was $120 which was from a Ford dealer. Shop around to get a better price. Call Napa and Ford dealers.

after a panic stop with wheels locked my ABS light comes on, like i need a light to tell me rear wheels locked up. i just ignore because i feel that ABS on rear wheels only is just worthless. just my 2 cents

grounding the diagnostic wire will only work if the abs light is illuminated at that time. So with the light on and ignition in the on postion (engine running) grounding the wire will cause the ABS light to flash codes. Commonly the usual problem is either the rabs valve or the rear abs sensor. With the rear abs sensor being more common. The rear abs sensor is easy to check with an ohm meter (spec's 1500-2500 ohms) and costs around $30.
