I have a '96 Explorer XLT, do I need a code reader to find which codes that are causing my ABS light to light up ?

Yes, you definately need a code reader to read ABS.
My suggestion for a scan tool is www.obd-2.com with PWM+ISO (needed for ABS) minimum protocols. It is about $150 dollars, money very well spent. You need a PC with it. I don't know anything else for less money to read ABS, transmission, ford extended data etc. Shops around here charge that to read ABS codes(ABS diagnostic service), so that paid for itself in one use (and many times after that).
