1999 ford explorer sport
I have a 1999 Ford Explorer Sport, 4.0 SOHC that died on me in traffic without warning. It will crank but not start. It's getting fuel and spark. On the advice of knowledgable people, I have replaced the ignition switch , fuel filter and cam sensor. All the fuses have been tested and are fine. The latest advice is the vehicle's computer but I don't want to incur so large an expense without certainty. I have bought OBD II scanner (and used it correctly) but it showed no trouble codes. I don't know how to interpret that. Any help offered would be greatly appreciated.

If it wont start while it was hot, your engine overheated and wait for it to cool down

It may be getting fuel but it may be not enough pressure. Did you check it with a fuel pressure tester? Sounds like a classic crapping of the fuel pump.

Although a tester wasn't used, the pressure was checked by pressing in on the valve and there was a pretty strong spray

If you were having issues with overheating before this happened, chances are your immediate shut down in traffic was due to whatever overheated.

That's irrelevant. Two pounds of pressure coming from that small hole will spray pretty good. Can you hear the pump priming when you first turn the key?

Good call. I meant for my timing chain comment to be on another thread. You need to check you fuel pressure with a gauge. The overheating is a big red flag.
