I have a 96 Explorer AWD 5.0L and the AC clutch plates seem to be rattling when the compressor is not engaged. Whenever the AC kicks in the rattling stops. Does the clutch bearing need to be replaced or the whole clutch assembly? Or do I need to look elsewhere?

edit: Just got home and my wife said that the AC would only work on Max AC setting. Checked it and verified that this is the case. You can hear the clutch click when using any of the other settings that engage the AC, but only cold air on Max AC. Could not get the plates to rattle, although she said they did on and off today.

Fixed the hot air problem. Well, maybe not fixed, but got it to work again. Blend door was sticking. Gave the bottom of the dash console a stiff wack and it seems to move again at least for now. This car isn't worth putting hte money in it to fix that problem.
