The ac quit on my 99 Explorer yesterday. It has a 5.0. I think it might be electrical since I do not here any clicking of the ac clutch when I turn the ac on and off.

This is the 1st time I looked at the ac. I see a disk extending fwd of the comp, and it remains fwd of the ac comp pulley with ~.25 in gap, even with the ac on or off. I suspect this is the clutch, and it quit pulling in for some reason.

The ac was running fine and full tilt while I was driving, then the air just started getting hot while blowing over a 3 minute period. A quit failure like that sounds electrical vs mech to me.

Any good trouble shooting tips for me to start with?

Can someone tell me which fuse I should check? I do not have an owners manual. I plan to by a shop manual today at Autozone, but wanted to get a head start if some of you could help.

Thanks in advance for your help.

It sounds like it may be the pressure switch. I had one go bad on a GMC truck, and same thing, no air. I took and jumpered the switch and it worked fine. That is how I knew it was the pressure switch. I think it is on the high pressure side and will have a 2 pronged electrical connection, jumper these 2 prongs(In the electrical plug) and see if the compressor cycles. If it does, you found your problem! Let me know what you find out.

He's referring to the low pressure cutout. Jumpering it will make the compressor run if a) the switch was bad, of if, b) you have a low charge due to a leak. If a) he's right. if b) he isn't. You need a gauge set to check pressures to know.

Cool Exploring
