I did a quick search but could not find the answer. I have 96 xlt OHV and I want to do a quick ac charge. Do I put it in the port to the right of the block going from the compressor to near the radiator? It seems to be the only place to have a port. Thanks!

hmmm that sounds like the high side port to me... I'd definitely be careful with that, it's a good way to blow your face off. The things you buy at auto parts stores won't fit the wrong one anyway, and don't try to force it.

What you're looking for is the low side service port (I gotta keep a link to that pic handy, as many times as that question has been asked), it's on the passenger side near the dashboard area (firewall) and is either located right on a big black canister or on a line right next to it.

Mine has a port on the left side (looking from the front of the engilne) just in front of the heater box. It has a screw on cap and goes in to the collector or whatever they call that cylinder. Mine is a '96 but it is a V8. Don't know if that makes a difference.

That's it!

The black cylinder is called a receiver/dryer.

right you are! Damn this senility. I can't remember my own name most of the time, much less the name of car parts.

The quick charge adapter should not fit on that fitting. You ONLY charge into the low side, which is on the passenger side, in the black receiver drier unit.

Thanks guys i found it. But of course now my air conditioning is blowing cold... well ill save the info for next time. Thanks again.

hmm... seems to me if it's blowing cold air now but it wasn't before and you didn't do anything, the problem may not be low refrigerant. If you have this problem again, check and make sure the compressor clutch is engaging/disengaging. A behind-the-dash problem can also cause hot air to come out of the A/C.

I wish the Explorers had blue and red caps on the A/C service ports, it'd make describing them to the n00bs a lot easier... :D
