Welcome to the Forum Brad.
It seems like you expected the Explorer to brake itself when reversing into the spot. It does not as you found out. Accelerating, braking and shifting gears is still the driver's responsibility. When the time comes, that info is displayed on the Sync screen. I haven't tried it on mine but that was the way it worked on my 2011 Limited. See page 199 of your Manual.

If that is the case, color me stupid, and embarrassed! I do have to say that my expectation is that the vehicle would stop. I may well be wrong however with active braking, collision avoidance and the fact that I was watching the backup screen, I saw nothing to indicate that I should apply brake or any warning sounds that typically happen when something is close to the vehicle. I will check my manual and get back...

Sorry this happened! It always sucks when it is user error. The system does not autobrake. Only the steering is controlled but you are responsible for braking and changing the gears as Peter has said. I agree though, a little warning on the screen would be nice because I was testing this feature when I was scoping a platinum at a dealership and I wasn't notified that it does not autobrake. Not even the salesman new which he should have

One recommendation is to read up on the system in the manual before trying it. I would recommend doing this, even reading up on active cruise control, before you use it.

Everyone should sit down and read the manual over from front to back. I doubt anyone can pick up all the info at once, usually reading thru one section and trying it out for a period of time to familiarize your self with it is the most effective. If you go back over the section you have tried out and nothing new is learned this time around its on to the next section:D

The Explorer actually does not have 'Active Braking' and the 'Collision Warning' System (red flashing LEDs in dash) only operates on the front when the vehicle ahead is travelling over 6 mph. When the system activates, it pre charges the brakes to allow for a quicker response if needed but the braking is still done manually (page 228). Some people refer to it as 'Active Brake Assist'.

So the braking does not actually happen on its own? As in the traffic ahead slows down, it won't slow down? What's the point of active cruise control then???

I was talking about Collision Warning not ACC. ACC will slow the vehicle down but the Collision Warning is just that, a warning. It does not apply braking. Adaptive Cruise Control will use braking when required and also activate the brake lights.

And keep in mind, the car's ACC can be trusted more than the collision warning.

The ACC has never let me down. The collision warning sometimes gives a false positive. Rest assured, if the two are enabled, the ACC will not start slamming the brakes on the car if collision warning goes off -- only if it's SURE that the car ahead is slowing or stopped.

It's an interesting dynamic to be sure.

No trim level of Explorer offers frontal collision warning with auto braking, yet...
